Season 1, Episode 20 Transcript

Jack Bauer voice over: Right now, terrorists are plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate. My wife and daughter have been targeted. And people that I work with may be involved in both. I'm Federal Agent Jack Bauer, and today is the longest day of my life.
------------------------
Previously on 24:
David Palmer: Last night I received a phone call regarding my son, Keith, and my daughter, Nicole. That call has unfortunately set off a chain of events that has culminated into a terrible tragedy.
------------------------
Phil Parslow: I'm your friend. You told me so yourself. So you're gonna have to trust my judgment.
Jovan Myovic: Your daughter. Where is she?
Teri Bauer: I… I don't know!
------------------------
Rick: Frank, what are you gonna do?
Frank: What does it look like?
Rick: You're gonna rip him off?
Krugman: Where's the money?
Frank: I got your money. All right, stand down!
Krugman: What you gonna do now, man? Kill us?
Frank: Yeah.
Krugman: You have the right to remain silent. Arrest all of them.
------------------------
George Mason: Where are you headed?
Jack Bauer: I’m going to Saugus. Alexis paid this guy off to knock the power out at a specific address out there. I wanna know why.
George Mason: So correct me if I'm wrong, but what this day basically boils down to is a personal vendetta against you and Palmer by the family of Victor Drazen?
Jack Bauer: Yes.
George Mason: Any ideas on why the Serbs would wanna spend this much money to turn the power off in the middle of the woods?
Jack Bauer: Someone knows we're here.
------------------------
The following takes place between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. on the day of the California Presidential Primary.
[After the helicopter departs from the empty wildlife sanctuary, Jack and Mason wander the premises and turn up nothing.]
George Mason: You know what, Jack? I take back what I said. It's getting dull.
Jack Bauer: That helicopter made a flyby for a reason.
George Mason: Maybe, maybe not.
Jack Bauer: Come here and help me with this. One, two, three.
[Mason helps Jack lift a door.]
George Mason: There's nothing here. We're wasting our time.
Jack Bauer: Alexis tried to pay off a power-company official to cut off the electricity at this location at 7:20 for a reason. There's something here that they want, and they’ve gone to great lengths to shut it down.
[Mason’s cell phone rings. He answers it.]
George Mason: Mason. Excellent news. Half an hour. OK, don't let anyone in or out until we get there. Alexis Drazen just got out of surgery. I think we ought to be there when he wakes up.
Jack Bauer: You go ahead.
George Mason: Jack, we were fed misinformation. The address in the file, the time that Morgan gave you - the whole thing. I mean, look around. There's nothing here. Nothing.
Jack Bauer: Maybe.
George Mason: But you're gonna stick around anyway.
Jack Bauer: It's three minutes after seven, George. I wanna be here at 7:20. Look, you can send a car back for me, OK? I promise I won't disappear on you.
George Mason: I don't have time to argue with you.
[Mason heads over to the hospital to wait for Alexis to awaken. Jack remains alone at the abandoned field.]
------------------------
[At the Bauer house, Tony quickly loads Teri and the ailing Dr. Parlsow into his truck. Teri is distraught after her breakthrough in remembering what happened to her daughter.]
Teri Bauer: Oh, my God!
Tony Almeida: Stay right here. Stay right there, Teri.
Phil Parslow: Who the hell was that guy?
Tony Almeida: I don't know.
Phil Parslow: Teri? Teri, it's OK. I'm right here. It's OK. Teri, listen to me, take a breath.
Teri Bauer: I can't. I can't! I saw the car explode.
Tony Almeida: Teri.
Teri Bauer: There was nothing left!
Tony Almeida: Hey. Hey! Kim is alive. She got out before the explosion. I talked to her, all right? She was fine. She was worried about you. Now, I need your help. I need to get you back to CTU. Come on.
Teri Bauer: Oh, my God.
Tony Almeida: I need your help, Teri. Come on.
Teri Bauer: What did she say? What did she say when you talked to her? Where is she?
Tony Almeida: We don't know where she is. She wouldn't tell us.
Teri Bauer: What do you mean, “You don’t know where she is”?
Tony Almeida: After the safe house, she didn't trust us, and I don't blame her. Get in here.
[Tony helps Phil get inside the car.]
Teri Bauer: We have to find her! Tony, we have to find…
Tony Almeida: Believe me, we're looking. Teri, get in the car!
[Teri and Tony get inside the car. Tony starts driving.]
Teri Bauer: Where's Jack? Does he know what's happening?
Tony Almeida: He's out on an assignment. I should hear from him soon, though.
[Tony gets calls CTU.]
Nina Myers: Myers.
Tony Almeida: Hey, Nina, it's me. I found Teri at the Bauer house. Somebody was trying to kill her, but I took the hitter down before he could get to her. You gotta send a team over there in case he's got backup, all right?
Nina Myers: Of course, of course. Is she all right?
Tony Almeida: She will be. She seems to have suffered some sort of temporary memory loss. She's got a friend with her, too. I’m guessing a pretty good one by the way he's acting.
Nina Myers: Wait a minute. Are you sure? Who is this guy?
Tony Almeida: His name's Phil Parslow. She vouches for him. Apparently she's known him a long time. Look, he was hit, but not too badly.
Nina Myers: OK. Where are you now?
Tony Almeida: Uh, 20, 30 minutes away.
Nina Myers: OK. Take him to the clinic. I'll send someone over there to question him. I think you should bring Teri here.
Tony Almeida: OK.
------------------------
[Kim is brought to the police station for booking, along with Rick, Melanie and Frank.]
Kim Bauer: Don't I get a phone call?
Krugman: Let’s go. Lock them down. Come on.
Kim Bauer: Look, I need to talk to someone.
Krugman: Yeah, don't we all!
Melanie: Don't listen to the bitch. She lies.
Krugman: Look, you're gonna get a chance for that after we put you through. (To Melanie) Come with me. You're mine.
Rick: They're gonna ask you about Frank… and the deal.
Kim Bauer: Well, I don't know anything about Frank or the deal.
Rick: Tell them that. You were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Kim Bauer: I think I should tell them about everything else too. I mean, what happened today. After the safe house, I'm not sure if I can trust anybody.
Rick: You trust me, right?
Kim Bauer: Yeah, and look where it got me. Yes, I trust you, and I know you're trying to do the right thing.
Rick: OK, then listen to me. Tell them everything. What happened at the safe house has nothing to do with this. Whatever you tell them, I'll back it up, including my part in it.
Kim Bauer: You're gonna get in trouble.
Rick: Then I'll get in trouble. It's about time I faced up to what I did.
Kim Bauer: All right.
Krugman: You're up.
------------------------
[Palmer checks in on his daughter.]
David Palmer: How are you feeling?
Nicole Palmer: I'm fine, Daddy. Relieved, actually. I think that maybe… living with a secret is harder work than I thought.
David Palmer: I'd be lying to you if I told you the hard work was over. You're gonna be asked some questions - we all are - that we'd rather not deal with. But if we stick together, we'll get through it.
[Sherry comes inside the room.]
David Palmer: Would you give your mother and me a few minutes?
[Nicole kisses her father, and then hugs her mother. She leaves the room.]
Sherry Palmer: I'm sorry. I, uh… didn't mean to interrupt your… celebration.
David Palmer: You could have joined it.
Sherry Palmer: Well, I'm not in the mood to celebrate the end of your campaign, David. You just gave your concession speech.
David Palmer: That remains to be seen.
Sherry Palmer: Do you really think people want a president who acts like some guest on a bad afternoon talk show, confessing his sins publicly?
David Palmer: It's always possible that they want someone honest. Mike seems to think I still have a shot.
Sherry Palmer: Yeah, well, it's Mike’s job to tell you what you wanna hear. Mine is to tell you the truth.
David Palmer: You're not qualified to tell me the truth.
Sherry Palmer: It took 13 minutes for you to tear apart everything that it took us 25 years to build. Why don't you just let me mourn that loss, OK?
David Palmer: Fair enough.
Sherry Palmer: I only hope your conscience comforts you when you finally realize this is all over.
[Sherry walks toward the door.]
David Palmer: You mean the campaign or us?
[Sherry leaves the room and closes the door behind her.]
------------------------
[Jack continues to search the vacant sanctuary grounds. Security guards watch him from a distance. Jack stumbles upon a stairwell that leads to a locked door. One of the guards radios this news to Andre Drazen, who is camped in a nearby camouflaged tent.]
Guard: Confirm, Alpha One.
Andre Drazen: This is Alpha One.
Guard: Bauer's gone below.
Andre Drazen: Positive it was Bauer?
Guard: Yes.
Andre Drazen: What's he doing here?
Guard: He wasn't invited, that's for sure.
[Suddenly, an alarm sounds in the stairwell. A group of guards emerge from the door and shoot Jack with a taser dart. They grab Jack and drag him inside.]
------------------------
[Jack awakes in a holding cell inside the underground facility. DeSalvo comes in.]
Jack Bauer: My name is Jack Bauer, and I work for C…
Mark DeSalvo: CTU. I know who you are, agent Bauer. I checked you out. My name is DeSalvo. DOD.
Jack Bauer: Whatever this place is, it's obvious that no one's supposed to know it's here.
Mark DeSalvo: Well, you seem to have found it OK. This is a prison facility, class-three detention center. So what the hell are you doing here?
Jack Bauer: At 8:00 a.m. this morning there was an assassination attempt on Senator Palmer. I'm the lead investigator. I was following a thread. The thread led me here.
Mark DeSalvo: I need more than that.
Jack Bauer: The people that want Palmer dead bribed someone from the power company to shut down the electricity to the grid that you're hooked into. They were ordered to do this at 7:20. Something's gonna happen here then, isn't it? Mr. DeSalvo, you better listen to me. The people that are behind this assassination attempt are ex-military Serbs. They’re working for a family called the Drazens. They're on a vendetta. They’ve killed a lot of people today, and they're gonna kill a lot more unless we do something about this. So, please, sir, I will ask you one more time. What is happening here at 7:20?
Mark DeSalvo: A prisoner is being delivered by chopper.
Jack Bauer: Who?
Mark DeSalvo: His identity's classified even from me. They move him every few weeks on a random schedule. What do these… Drazens want with him anyway?
Jack Bauer: It's hard to tell unless I know who the prisoner is. They might wanna kill him, they might wanna set him free. Either way, you got about five minutes. You'd better call for backup.
Mark DeSalvo: Backup can't get here in five minutes.
Jack Bauer: Call anyway. If I'm wrong, you've gone through a little trouble. I'll take the heat for that. If I'm right, you've potentially saved every life in this building. Please.
[DeSalvo dials the phone.]
Mark DeSalvo: Yeah, have Wyckoff call me ASAP.
Jack Bauer: Thank you. What's your personnel here?
Mark DeSalvo: Three guards, plus a maintenance man, two technicians.
Jack Bauer: Your maintenance man and the technicians, are they weapons-trained?
Mark DeSalvo: No, the civilians have never fired a weapon in their lives.
Jack Bauer: The Drazens don't know that. Issue them full service gear. Have them stand by.
Mark DeSalvo: To do what, exactly?
Jack Bauer: To make this place look more secure than it is. At least until backup arrives.
[In the camouflage tent, Andre Drazen readies his armed mercenaries.]
Andre Drazen: It's almost time. Three minutes.
Harris: You still haven't heard from your brother?
Andre Drazen: No.
Harris: He was supposed to verify his meeting with the man from the power company.
Andre Drazen: If there was a problem, he would have called. You seem anxious, Harris. I thought professionals didn't get anxious.
Harris: Professionals get very anxious when a plan goes off the tracks.
Andre Drazen: There's nothing wrong with the plan.
Harris: Then what's Bauer doing here?
Andre Drazen: Just get your men ready. It's time.
[Jack prepares the civilians on the premises.]
Jack Bauer: Hey. Come here. No. Like this.
Mark DeSalvo: All right, let's get moving.
Jack Bauer: Keep your stock in tight, keep your weapon down. You're gonna be all right. Any word on the backup?
Mark DeSalvo: They're looking into it.
Jack Bauer: Weapon.
Mark DeSalvo: We good?
Man: Yes, sir.
Jack Bauer: Let's go.
Mark DeSalvo: All right.
[As the helicopter approaches, Jack, DeSalvo and the men from the facility come out from underground with their weapons raised. The lights from the facility guide the helicopter.]
Jack Bauer: Put your men in front of the lights so they can be seen!
Mark DeSalvo: Form a line right in front of the lights! Look like you're ready for something.
Andre Drazen: 45 seconds.
Harris: You said there'd be a warden and three guards. I count eight, including Bauer. They're expecting us, Andre.
Andre Drazen: It doesn't matter. The power's going down in 25 seconds. The sudden darkness will disorient them.
Harris: What if there is no darkness?
Andre Drazen: There will be.
[Andre Drazen's men see the armed security and wait for the power to be cut off for their ambush. The lights, however, remain lit. A hooded prisoner is led out from the chopper.]
Jack Bauer: Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!
Andre Drazen: Eight more seconds. Five, four, three, two, one.
Harris: The perimeter lights are still on.
Andre Drazen: Dammit! All right, we're still going.
Harris: No. Security is twice what we anticipated. The lights are on. We'll be cut to pieces.
Andre Drazen: Get ready to move.
Harris: We have to stand down.
Andre Drazen: My money, my decision.
Harris: My crew. They'll obey my orders.
Andre Drazen: All right.
Harris: Plans have changed. Stand down.
[Jack helps lead the prisoner down the stairs and into the facility without opposition.]
------------------------
[Krugman interrogates Kimberly.]
Krugman: Sit down.
Kim Bauer: My father is Jack Bauer.
Krugman: Sit.
Kim Bauer: He's the director of the Los Angeles bureau of CTU. Counter Terrorist Unit. Have you heard of it?
Krugman: I can't say that I have.
Kim Bauer: Do you want the number?
[Kim writes the number for him.]
Krugman: Look, what I want is information on Frank Allard and his plans to buy and distribute 1,000 hits of ecstasy. That's it.
Kim Bauer: I don't know him. I met him for the first time a couple of hours ago. Do you know that someone tried to kill David Palmer this morning?
Krugman: Yeah.
Kim Bauer: Aren't you curious how I know about it?
Krugman: I don't know. Maybe because it's been on the news the last 12 hours.
Kim Bauer: I didn't realize that. I was kidnapped. By the same people who were trying to kill Senator Palmer. Look, I know this sounds crazy, but they kidnapped my mother and they tried to get my father to help them, but he rescued us.
Krugman: And then he dropped you off at Frankie's so you could what, earn spending money dealing drugs?
Kim Bauer: No. No. They brought us to a safe house, but it was attacked, and I think they captured my mother again.
Krugman: OK. You know, she told me you had an active imagination. She wasn't kidding.
Kim Bauer: Who?
Krugman: Your friend. The one we picked you up with.
Kim Bauer: Melanie?
Krugman: Mm-hm.
Kim Bauer: No! No. She's not my friend. She thinks I'm after her boyfriend. You can't believe anything she says about me.
Krugman: OK, look, I'm gonna stick you back in the holding cell. Maybe that'll convince you not to screw around.
Kim Bauer: Call this number. Tell them that I am Jack Bauer's daughter and that I'm here. Ask them if they think I'm screwing around.
Krugman: Come on.
[Krugman takes Kim back to the holding cell.]
------------------------
[After nothing goes wrong with the prisoner handoff at the detention facility, DeSalvo questions whether Jack's claims are really on the level.]
Jack Bauer: DeSalvo, wait, wait, wait. Just because they haven't attacked yet doesn't mean they're not going to.
Mark DeSalvo: Maybe. And maybe this is a crock and there's nobody out there at all.
Jack Bauer: Drazen's crew is out there, don’t you get it? They didn't get the power to shut down. They're working on their contingency plan. Trust me, I know these people.
Mark DeSalvo: I’ve requested backup. There's not much else I can do.
Jack Bauer: Actually, there is. You can let me talk to that prisoner.
Mark DeSalvo: Forget it. Access is something I can't give. My orders are explicit. I told you, I can't even speak to him myself.
Jack Bauer: Don’t you understand? Everything that is happening here is connected to the assassination attempt on Senator Palmer. If you do not let me interrogate that prisoner, you're putting the senator's life in danger. Do you want that responsibility?
Mark DeSalvo: Listen, Bauer, you are welcome to go over my head if you want, but I can't help you. Now, I gotta process this guy.
Jack Bauer: Wait. You said you work for the DOD, right?
Mark DeSalvo: And?
Jack Bauer: Can I borrow your phone?
[Jack makes a phone call to Palmer.]
------------------------
[Andre Drazen plans his next move with his men.]
Andre Drazen: From the machine room we'll go through the fire wall in section A4.
Harris: That's two inches of reinforced steel.
Andre Drazen: We can take it out with a shaped charge. Concussion will disorient the men posted there long enough for us to take them out. If you have a problem, Harris, share it with the rest of us.
Harris: It took us a year to organize this operation, and now it's all coming apart. First, your brother disappears before he can cut the power, then we find out we're up against twice as many men as you said there will be.
Andre Drazen: We can still achieve what we came here to do.
Harris: I'm not against going in, Andre. As long as we take the time to do it right.
Andre Drazen: You don't think this is the right way?
Harris: I'd say the odds pretty much suck.
Andre Drazen: How much worse would you calculate they've become?
Harris: I don't know.
Andre Drazen: Give me a number. 10 per cent? 20 per cent?
Harris: I'd say 50.
Andre Drazen: Then I'll adjust your compensation accordingly.
Harris: It's not about the money.
Andre Drazen: You accepted an advance, signed a contract.
Harris: Which you broke first, Andre.
[Andre grabs Harris and threatens him with a knife.]
Andre Drazen: The next word that that I hear from you that isn't constructive… I will release you from your contract.
------------------------
David Palmer: Yes. I wanna clear every interview that Nicole gives.
Man: Peronally?
David Palmer: Yes, personally.
Man: Yes, sir.
David Palmer: Whenever possible, I wanna be there.
Man: All right, sir.
David Palmer: Let me know.
Man: Of course.
[Mike enters the room. He opens up the TV.]
David Palmer: So, is it as bad as Sherry said it would be?
News Reporter on TV: …predicted a sharp drop in Senator Palmer's numbers, it's not turning out that way. Our instant polls indicate that the senator's base of support is holding steady in most areas of the country, and in some cases it's actually increasing. When asked if the senator’s disclosures made them more likely to vote for him in November’s general election, less likely or made no difference at all, 60 per cent said “no difference”, 22 per cent said “more likely”, while only 18 per cent said “less likely”.
[A phone rings.]
Mike Novick: Looks like you were right, David.
[A woman enters, holding a phone.]
News Reporter on TV: …seemed to indicate that voters approved of Senator Palmer's honesty before a national television audience a little more than a half-hour ago.
Woman: Senator. It's a Jack Bauer. He says it's urgent.
David Palmer: Thank you. Jack, it's me. Did you get anything from Alexis Drazen?
Jack Bauer: No, sir. He's just coming out of surgery now, but I did follow up on a lead we got from his hotel room. Senator, I'm gonna need your help.
David Palmer: Go on.
Jack Bauer: I'm at something called a class-three detention facility. It's basically a prison that doesn't exist, and neither does the prisoner they just brought in.
David Palmer: Who's the prisoner?
Jack Bauer: That's where I’m gonna need your help, sir. This place is run by the Department of Defense.
David Palmer: You want me to pull some strings?
Jack Bauer: I need access to the prisoner as soon as you can make it happen. The facility's located in Saugus at the address that you gave me. The warden's name is DeSalvo. He's a reasonable guy, but right now his hands are tied.
David Palmer: I'll do what I can.
Jack Bauer: Thank you, sir.
[Jack notices a mounted camera in the facility with its wires threading into a narrow conduit that runs along the ceiling. An idea forms in his mind as he follows the conduit to an observation room with monitors watching every area under the ground. Jack spots the holding cell with the unmasked prisoner.]
Jack Bauer: Come on, you son of a bitch, turn around.
[DeSalvo comes in and catches Jack in the act.]
Mark DeSalvo: Dammit, Bauer! That prisoner's identity is classified!
Jack Bauer: I’m sorry, but I told you, I need to know who that prisoner is.
Mark DeSalvo: No.
[The prisoner turns around. Jack realizes who the prisoner is.]
Jack Bauer: That's impossible.
Mark DeSalvo: You recognize him?
Jack Bauer: That's Victor Drazen.
Mark DeSalvo: Who is he?
Jack Bauer: The man I killed two years ago.
------------------------
Mark DeSalvo: All right, listen, Bauer. You're asking me to risk my job, maybe go to jail. I need some quid pro quo. What's your connection to this guy?
Jack Bauer: What I'm about to tell you is secured information. Two years ago a congressional subcommittee decided that Victor Drazen was the key threat to the peace in Bosnia. So they authorized a mission to take him out. I led that mission. When we got there, things went wrong. Earlier today I found out that Victor Drazen's wife and daughter were killed in the attack. I thought we'd killed Victor Drazen, but apparently I was wrong.
Mark DeSalvo: So now his sons wanna break him out.
Jack Bauer: More than that. They wanna exact their revenge on me. Earlier today his people kidnapped my wife and daughter. We got them back. They're safe for now. But if Victor Drazen escapes from here, I lose any leverage I've got of keeping his people away from my family.
Mark DeSalvo: I'll make another call.
Jack Bauer: We don't have time for calls. We need to take this prisoner and move him ourselves now.
Mark DeSalvo: I said I'll make a call.
------------------------
[Andre Drazen makes a backup plan.]
Andre Drazen: We still need to cut the power.
Harris: But your brother hasn't contacted us yet.
Andre Drazen: He would have called by now… if he were alive. We should assume Alexis is dead. There may be another way, though. The substation for this sector is a half-mile from here. A few ounces of C-5 should be sufficient. To save time, we'll go in through the front.
Harris: The idea is not to attract attention.
Andre Drazen: The idea is to get my father out of prison. This is the best chance we'll ever have.
------------------------
Nina Myers: These don't match.
Agent: Uh-huh.
Nina Myers: Hold on.
[Mason returns to CTU after checking in on Alexis Drazen's status. Nina sees Mason entering and approaches him.]
Nina Myers: Where's Jack? I thought he was with you.
George Mason: He opted to stay in the field. Literally.
Nina Myers: Where, on Saugus?
George Mason: Yeah, the address from the Drazen file.
Nina Myers: What’s he doing there? Why didn't he come back with you?
George Mason: I don't know. He's a stubborn guy. He insisted on staying. Meanwhile, Alexis Drazen came to at the hospital, so I headed over there to interrogate him. He hasn’t talked yet, but I cut off his morphine supply, so he should be pretty chatty in about an hour.
Nina Myers: You didn't tell Jack about his family, did you? What are you doing, George?
George Mason: What are you doing? The last time I checked, it wasn't a part of my job description to have to explain myself to my subordinates. Now, unless they've called off the hit on Palmer's life, you should be working on securing his agenda for the rest of the day, all right? Looks like he's going to be our next president.
------------------------
News Reporter on TV: Senator David Palmer has already carried New York, and with the polls closing shortly here in California, it now appears that Senator Palmer will maintain his lead…
Sherry Palmer: Hey. Everyone's outside celebrating the latest poll. Come on out, sweetheart. What is it, David? What's wrong now?
David Palmer: Before, when you said it was over, and I asked you what you meant, the campaign or me…
Sherry Palmer: What I said came out of wanting to protect my family, wanting to protect you. You can't hold that against me.
David Palmer: Sherry… you're an amazing woman. Smart, determined, sure of yourself. You always know what you want. But you don't want me, not really. I don't think you've wanted me for a very long time.
Sherry Palmer: That's nonsense.
David Palmer: Is it? Maybe if everything with Nicole and Keith never happened… but it did happen. And you kept the truth from me for all these years. I don't think you could have done that without pulling away. And now… now I can't help thinking that I don't trust you anymore. And if I can't trust you… how could I love you?
Sherry Palmer: Well, David… you may not love me, but you will never leave me. You take all the time you need to get yourself together and then you come out and you greet all the people who have given up every day and every night of their lives for the last year to put us in office.
David Palmer: Us?
Sherry Palmer: Yes. That's right. Us. Because come January, David, when you're being sworn in, make no mistake about it, this woman here will be standing right next to you.
[Sherry leaves the room.]
------------------------
[Kimberly is placed into a group holding cell with a number of female prisoners.]
Male guard: Open up two.
Female guard: Move away from the door. Now.
Male guard: OK, Martinez, settle down over there.
------------------------
Mark DeSalvo: One thing I don't get - if Drazen was the target, then what's he doing here?
Jack Bauer: Obviously someone thought he was more valuable alive than dead.
Mark DeSalvo: By “someone”, you mean one of our people?
Jack Bauer: He's probably been feeding them intelligence.
Mark DeSalvo: Then why put you and your men through the charade of trying to kill him in the first place?
Jack Bauer: Because they wanted the rest of the world to think he was dead. My mission was set up to fail from the start. I lost every man I went in there with.
[DeSalvo’s cell phone rings.]
Mark DeSalvo: DeSalvo. Yeah, he's right here. I understand.
Jack Bauer: We got permission to move Drazen?
Mark DeSalvo: No. That request is still working its way up the chain of command, but DOD says you can interrogate him if you want.
Jack Bauer: Good.
Mark DeSalvo: Bauer. Five minutes.
Jack Bauer: Fine.
[Jack goes into the holding room. DeSalvo watches Jack's interrogation on the monitors.]
Jack Bauer: My name is Jack Bauer. You'll have to pardon my surprise. I saw you die. I watched you enter a building. Nobody could have survived that explosion. Our intelligence told us the building was empty when you entered. Your fight is with me. Not my wife, not my daughter, but with me. Please… leave my family alone. Mr. Drazen, you have already lost your wife and your daughter. You don't need to lose your sons too.
Victor Drazen: My sons are soldiers.
Jack Bauer: Then they will die for nothing. We know about the rescue plan. It was scheduled for 7:20. We stopped it. We've called in for backup. If they try again, sir, they will die.
Victor Drazen: Then you have nothing to worry about.
Jack Bauer: Call it off, Victor.
Victor Drazen: How can I?
Jack Bauer: The same way you've been communicating with them this entire time! Call it off or your sons will die!
[DeSalvo enters the holding room.]
Mark DeSalvo: All right. We'll move him.
Jack Bauer (whispering): Is there another way out of here that's not on the schematic? A fire or flood egress?
Mark DeSalvo: Yes.
Jack Bauer: Good.
Mark DeSalvo: I'll get my men ready.
Jack Bauer (whispering): Have them armed like we did before.
[Jack approaches Victor Drazen.]
Jack Bauer: Get up. Get up!
Mark DeSalvo: We're evacuating the prisoner. Grab your weapons. Have all personnel convene in quarter C, now.
Man: Yes, sir.
------------------------
[As Dr. Parslow is taken away by a paramedic, Teri and Tony leave the clinic.]
------------------------
[Palmer and Sherry steal a glance amid the campaign celebration.]
------------------------
[DeSalvo and the guards hustle Victor Drazen down the corridor. The lights in the facility flicker and then fade.]
Mark DeSalvo: Move out.
Jack Bauer: Let's go. (To Drazen) Get against the wall.
Mark DeSalvo (to radio): Lawrence, the power's down in the west quadrant.
Lawrence (over radio): Copy that.
Victor Drazen: They’re here.
