PREVIOUSLY ON 24.
DAVID PALMER: How much longer is Prescott going to detain me?
MIKE NOVICK: Until after the press conference. In a couple of hours he's going to announce the US response to the bomb and his ascension to the presidency.
RYAN CHAPPELLE: I'm done with Bauer. He's chasing a trail that leads nowhere. We're onto other things. You've been reassigned.
TONY ALMEIDA: You can't reassign me now.
RYAN: You have made yourself a liability I just can't afford.
KIM BAUER: This is Kim Bauer. I need to find my dad.
JACK BAUER: Sweetheart, what's wrong?
KIM: I'm at the Mathesons' house. Gary was here. He has a gun. Dad, he killed the police officer that brought me here.
JACK: I want you to point the gun at his chest and pull the trigger now. - Is he dead?
KIM: Yeah.
JACK: I'm gonna send someone to pick you up now. I want you to go downstairs and wait for them. Can you do that?
KIM: Yeah.
JACK: Mr. President, I can tell you for certain, the Cyprus audio has been forged. I have in custody the man who engineered it. I'm gonna be bringing him in soon.
JACK: How's it gonna work?
ALEX HEWITT: I'm gonna make a recording for them. Right on the spot, shift it around, reframe segments. It'll have the same specs as Cyprus.
SHERRY PALMER: Where are you going?
HEWITT: This is taking too long. I don't trust you any more.
SHERRY: We're the only ones who can help you. Without us you don't stand a chance.
JACK: Alex! - Alex!

THE FOLLOWING TAKES PLACE BETWEEN 6:00 A.M. AND 7:00 A.M.
[Tony signs a paper and hands it to a man.]
MAN: Thank you.
[Michelle comes up to him.]
TONY: How's Chappelle doing?
MICHELLE: He's still unconscious, but he's starting to stir.
TONY: Yeah, the drug I gave him is short-acting. I may have to give him another shot soon.
MICHELLE: How long can you keep pumping him ... with that stuff?
TONY: Well, we only have to keep him on ice long enough for Jack to deliver Hewitt. How are we coming on the chopper?
MICHELLE: It should land at Hewitt's place in about ten minutes. We should get Hewitt back here in about half an hour.
TONY: Good.
MICHELLE: What about Carrie? Is she asking about Chappelle?
TONY: Not yet. Ah, I have her working on image processing. That should keep her busy for a while.
MAN: Excuse me, Mr. Almeida? A Brad Hammond from Division is on the line for Mr. Chappelle. Do you know where he is?
TONY: No, I'll take it.
[The man hands him the phone.]
TONY: Mr. Hammond, this is Tony Almeida. How can I help you, sir?
HAMMOND: Where's Ryan?
TONY: Ah, I'm not sure.
HAMMOND: His office says he arrived at CTU three hours ago. And none of your people can find him.
TONY: He must have stepped out.
HAMMOND: Your office doesn't have him logging out. Did he say where he was going?
TONY: Not to me, sir, no, but, ah, I'll let you know as soon as I find him.
HAMMOND: No, Mr. Almeida, you'll let me know what's going on over there. I know Ryan Chappelle was going over there to assess the situation. And I cannot think of a reason he would be out of contact during a national crisis.
TONY: Mr. Hammond, I'm sorry, I've told you all that I know, sir. Ah, but I'll make sure Ryan calls you as soon as he returns.
HAMMOND: You do that.
TONY: Thank you, sir.
[He shuts the phone.]
MICHELLE: What's going on?
TONY: Division knows something's up.
MICHELLE: So, what are we gonna do?
TONY: Well, we gotta get Alex Hewitt here as quickly as possible.
[Hewitt runs through narrow aisles. Jack follows him.]
JACK: Alex!
[Hewitt knocks out the light bulbs on his way.]
JACK: Alex!
[Jack looks around with a flashlight.]
JACK: Alex, if you don't come with me, Kingsley will kill you, you know that!
[Hewitt takes a wrapped package down from a steel joist. He unwraps a gun.]
HEWITT: I just did what they told me. I didn't know what was gonna happen.
JACK: Your only way out of this is to let me take you into CTU. You can cut a deal, testify. Alex, you're gonna have to trust me!
[Hewitt goes on running.]
JACK: Alex! - Alex! Stop running!
[Hewitt comes to a boarded-up door. He starts tearing down the planks.]
JACK: Alex!
[Hewitt turns and looks at him.]
JACK: Alex, just listen to me. A chopper is on its way to take us to CTU where no one can hurt you. Please, Alex. Help me stop this war and I will help you stay alive. I promise. Please.
[Hewitt smashes a window and jumps out.]
JACK: Alex! Stop, dammit!
[Jack follows him out to the roof. Hewitt is gone.]
06:05:12, 06:05:13, 06:05:14, 06:05:15
[Kingsley is on the phone.]
KINGSLEY: I know the oil stocks closed high in Hong Kong last night, Max. But you got to remember, once the president announces the war the margins will change dramatically.
MAX: But the prices will spike immediately.
KINGSLEY: It's still worth acquiring any available shares.
MAX: Do will still have our problem?
KINGSLEY: No. That'll be taken care of.
MAX: This must go smoothly, Peter.
KINGSLEY: Max, don't worry about it.
MAX: I have to go.
KINGSLEY: OK.
[A woman comes up to him.]
KINGSLEY: What did you get?
WOMAN: All the recordings and data.
KINGSLEY: But no Hewitt?
WOMAN: We got there as soon as we could but I didn't have enough lead time. Remember, everything, including Hewitt, was supposed to have been vaporised last night.
KINGSLEY: I'm not gonna let some pimply-faced techie ruin everything that we've planned. If he gets brought in and testifies there's gonna be no place for any of us to hide.
[Jack runs around a corner. He sees Hewitt on another roof platform some meters higher. He runs over there.]
JACK: Alex!
[Hewitt takes up the ladder and runs away. Jack gribs his chest and moans. Then he climbs up the rain gutter and follows Hewitt. Eventually Hewitt gets to the end of the roof and stops there. Jack reaches him.]
JACK: Alex! There's nowhere left to run, it's over.
HEWITT: All right. You, you promise, I'll be safe?
JACK: I give you my word.
[Hewitt takes out the gun. Jack immediately takes his gun up and aims at him.]
JACK: Alex, drop the gun! Drop the gun! If you try to shoot me I will have to shoot you back, and I promise, I won't miss. And I don't wanna do that!
[Hewitt looks at him. He's frightened and confused.]
JACK: I can't stop this war without you, Alex. Please, drop the gun! Please, drop the gun. Alex, you're a smart guy, think this through! Right now I am the only guy that can get you through this alive. Please, drop the gun.
[Hewitt starts crying.]
JACK: Drop the gun!
[Hewitt raises his gun. Jack shoots him in the leg.]
HEWITT: Ah! Ah, ah!
JACK: Alex!
HEWITT: You shot me. You shot me.
JACK: It's gonna be all right.
[Hewitt tumbles and falls down to a roof about three meters lower.]
JACK: No!
[He runs down a ladder to the lower roof.]
JACK: Alex, Alex. Can you hear me? Can you hear me? OK, stay calm. Don't move. You're gonna be all right, just don't move.
HEWITT: What happened?
JACK: You fell.
[He starts examining Hewitt's leg. Hewitt starts fading out.]
JACK: Alex, stay with me. Stay with me. Look, I want you to keep your eyes open, OK? Just keep your eyes open. OK.
[He goes on examining the leg.]
JACK: You're OK. The bullet didn't hit an artery. The chopper should be here any minute. You're not gonna bleed to death.
HEWITT: It really hurts.
JACK: I'm gonna get you something for the pain as soon as we get on the chopper.
JACK: Is there any other part of your body besides your leg that still hurts?
HEWITT: No, not really.
JACK: OK, good. It looks like you got lucky. You're gonna be fine.
HEWITT: My head feels wet.
JACK: Just relax. Try and relax.
[Jack examines his head. There is blood on the back.]
JACK: Just put your head down. OK.
[He takes Hewitt's hand.]

06:14:07, 06:14:08, 06:14:09, 06:14:10, 06:14:11, 06:14:12
[Kingsley. Jack talks to Hewitt. Palmer waits.]
JACK: I gotta make a phone call, OK? I'm not going anywhere. I just gotta make a phone call. Stay with me.
HEWITT: OK.
[Jack walks some steps away and starts dialing.]
JACK: Come on.
TONY: Almeida.
JACK: Tony, it's Jack. Hewitt's been hurt. I need emergency medical assistance on the roof of his loft now.
TONY: Jack, there is no EMT on the chopper but they do have a med kit on board. Can you handle it?
JACK: I don't know. I hope so. Look, I gotta get back to this.
TONY: Wait a second, wait a second.
JACK: What?
TONY: Look, ah, you may not be able to contact me after this.
JACK: Why?
TONY: Chappelle became a problem, so, ahm, I had to take him out of play, and they're onto me now. So it's only a matter of time before they take me out.
JACK: Who do I contact if I need help?
TONY: I'm sending Michelle out to the field to set up an off-site station. She's been doing whatever she can by remote access. She'll be on her closed cell, channel B, node 12-12.
JACK: B, node 12-12, OK, I got it.
TONY: Good luck, Jack.
JACK: Thanks.
[He goes back to Hewitt.]
JACK: Alex, how are you doing?
06:15:11, 06:15:12, 06:15:13, 06:15:14
[Michelle takes her jacket on. Tony comes up to her.]
TONY: This will get you into the van.
[She secretly takes a card out of his hand.]
MICHELLE: How will I break through the firewall?
TONY: This has a range of a few blocks. It's Huffman encoded, it'll get you in. Give me a call when you're set, all right?
MICHELLE: All right.
[They separate.]
[As Michelle continues Carrie walks up to her.]
CARRIE: Michelle.
MICHELLE: Hi.
CARRIE: Where are you going?
MICHELLE: I'm going out to my car.
CARRIE: Are you leaving?
MICHELLE: No. I'm just gonna get something and then come back. Is there a problem?
CARRIE: Have you seen Chappelle?
MICHELLE: No.
CARRIE: I've looked everywhere and I can't find him.
MICHELLE: Well, if I see him, I'll tell him you're looking for him.
[She tries to go on but Carrie blocks her way.]
CARRIE: And if you don't see him?
MICHELLE: What's that supposed to mean?
CARRIE: My job is to monitor communications around here. You don't think I know what's going on?
MICHELLE: Why don't you tell me, Carrie? What's going on?
CARRIE: You called Chappelle in to see Rudin. I just talked to Rudin. He doesn't know anything about it.
MICHELLE: Well, of course he told you that. His system wasn't loaded properly and it was your fault. He wanted to see Chappelle to complain about you. Stay out of my business Carrie. You' ll do a better job.
[She leaves.]
06:16:37, 06:16:38, 06:16:39, 06:16:40
[Palmer sits in his room. A man enters.]
DAVID: Brian. How did you find out about me?
BRIAN: The Attorney General called me. He said you'd want me for your counsel.
DAVID: What have they told you?
BRIAN: That you've been removed from office by the cabinet under the ... of the 25th Amendment.
DAVID: Is what they did legal?
BRIAN: Technically yes. The constitution gives the cabinet the right to declare the president incompetent without further definition or clarification.
DAVID: That also gives me the right to appeal that decision.
BRIAN: Yes, which I will do vigorously. Unfortunately, it's a lengthy process.
DAVID: We don't have time.
BRIAN: I don't know how to make it go any faster.
DAVID: None of those legalities matter, Brian. This country is about to go to war based on evidence that I am now convinced is false.
BRIAN: Except no one outside this room believes that.
DAVID: This evidence was manipulated by a man named Peter Kingsley. I need you to find out everything you can about him.
BRIAN: You have to understand, Mike Novick is tying my hands.
DAVID: Well, get him to untie them. Whatever you have to do.
BRIAN: Yes, sir.
[CTU. Tony's phone rings.]
TONY: Almeida.
MICHELLE: It's me. I'm in place.
TONY: Where are you?
MICHELLE: I'm on the north lot. Van 15a. Listen, Tony, Carrie's onto us. She was asking about Chappelle.
TONY: What did you tell her?
MICHELLE: That I didn't know what she was talking about. But we need her out of the way. Keep her occupied.
TONY: OK, I'll handle it. Look, set up and get ahold of Jack. I gotta go. Hammond's here.
06:18:06, 06:18:07, 06:18:08, 06:18:09
[Hammond enters the CTU office, followed by five men and women.]
TONY: Mr. Hammond.
HAMMOND: Tony.
TONY: What are you doing here, sir?
HAMMOND: I told you on the phone. I think there's a problem here. Where is Ryan Chappelle?
TONY: I haven't seen him yet, sir.
HAMMOND: I see.
[He points to the side.]
HAMMOND: Two of you take this side.
[He points to the other side.]
HAMMOND: I want this section covered.
TONY: What are you doing?
HAMMOND: I'm locking you down.
TONY: Locking us down? Sir, we're in the middle of preparing a domestic response to this war.
HAMMOND: That's not what I heard. I heard you were supporting a rogue agent against Division orders.
TONY: Where did you hear that?
HAMMOND: One of your own people.
[He turns.]
HAMMOND: Let's go. Cover every square inch of the place.
[Carrie and Tony look at each other.]
[Novick is on the phone.]
MIKE: Yes, sir. I'm aware of that.
PRESCOTT: That flyover space is critical. Do you think, David will help us?
MIKE: I don't know, sir.
BRIAN: Mike.
[Novick stops him.]
MIKE: I, I don't see us having much success with him.
PRESCOTT: We need this, Mike.
MIKE: Yes, sir, I'll try.
[He shuts the phone.]
MIKE: (to Brian) How is he?
BRIAN: David remains convinced that his decision to hold off on the bombers was the correct one. And he'll vigorously appeal his removal from office.
MIKE: The 25th Amendment gives him that right.
BRIAN: ... we'll prove we're being manipulated into this war and the Cyprus recording was falsified, plus we now think we know by whom.
MIKE: I'm listening.
BRIAN: A man named Peter Kingsley. He's got ties to oil interests both here and abroad.
MIKE: Have you found anything to connect him to the Cyprus recording, or the bomb for that matter?
BRIAN: No. We won't be able to do so without access to the intelligence database.
MIKE: David's locked down until we've gone public with the military action.
BRIAN: By then it'll be too late.
MIKE: I'm sorry.
BRIAN: Mike, Mike, wait. Just hold on a second. I remember when you signed up for David's first run at the Senate over 20 years ago. That's - that's a lot of history to just throw out the window.
[Novick turns around.]
BRIAN: Come, on, Mike. I know you just did what you thought was right, but let him try to prove his case. You owe him that.
MIKE: I'll have Colleen set up a computer station for you. You won't be able to transmit outgoing messages.
BRIAN: That's fair enough.
06:20:40, 06:20:41, 06:20:42, 06:20:43
[A Division man opens a door. Carrie follows him.]
MAN: What's in here?
CARRIE: One of our two holding rooms. No one's in there right now.
MAN: All right.
[They walk around a corner to the next door.]
MAN: And this?
CARRIE: The other holding room.
[The man tries the door. It's locked.]
CARRIE: It shouldn't be locked.
[She draws her card through the scanner besides the door. Nothing.]
MAN: What's wrong?
CARRIE: Someone must have reconfigured the lock.
[The man breaks the door open. He enters the room. Chappelle lies on the floor, still dazzled.]
RYAN: Help me.
JACK: Come on, Alex, keep talking to me.
HEWITT: Everything's a little blurry. What's happening to me?
JACK: Nothing. You, you just banged your head. It's gonna be all right, OK? You just hang in there.
[He hears a chopper.]
JACK: Alex, I can hear them. They are coming, OK? Help is on the way. Just hang in there, OK?
[He runs up the ladder and towards the approaching chopper.]
[Carrie is on the phone.]
CARRIE: Mr. Chappelle, I've located the CTU chopper that Tony Almeida sent to Jack Bauer. They're landing now. Would you like me to have them detain Bauer?
RYAN: No, I don't wanna waste any more resources on him. Just get the chopper back here.
CARRIE: Yeah, Paul. Mr. Chappelle wants you to come back now.
PAUL: We're just about to land.
CARRIE: Yeah, I know.
PAUL: I can see him.
CARRIE: It doesn't matter, just do it.
[The chopper stops the landing process and flies on the spot.]
JACK: What are you waiting for?
PILOT: I'm putting her down.
PAUL: No, cancel that.
JACK: Land the chopper now. What are you doing? Land the damn chopper!
[The chopper starts leaving.]
JACK: My witness is gonna die. Land! Your orders are to pick us up. Pick us up now!
[The chopper flies away.]
JACK: Dammit!
MICHELLE: Dessler.
JACK: Michelle, what the hell is going on here? The chopper won't pick us up.
MICHELLE: They were called to ... Hammond's locked us down.
JACK: I don't give a damn. Get me that chopper back. Hewitt is dying.
[He shuts the phone and runs back to Hewitt.]
JACK: Alex.
[Hewitt is dead.]
06:23:46, 06:23:47, 06:23:48
==========================
06:28:11, 06:28:12, 06:28:13, 06:28:14, 06:28:15, 06:28:16
[Hammond and Chappelle at CTU. David Palmer in his room. Michelle in the van.]
HAMMOND: Want me to deal with Almeida?
RYAN: No, Brad, thanks. I'll take care of him myself.
[Jack walks back over the roof. He's on the phone.]
JACK: Michelle, it's me.
MICHELLE: Jack, where are you?
JACK: I'm on my way back to Hewitt's loft. I want you to set up and be ready to interface with his computer.
MICHELLE: What about Hewitt?
JACK: He didn't make it. He's dead.
MICHELLE: Jack, I'm sorry.
JACK: Call me when you're ready.
[He shuts his phone.]
06:28:37, 06:28:38, 06:28:39, 06:28:40
[Novick enters Palmer's room.]
DAVID: Yes?
MIKE: I need to speak with you. It concerns national security.
DAVID: As I am not the commander in chief any more, I don't see how that would be relevant.
MIKE: We have a problem with the Turkish government. Our stealth bombers are nearing their airspace. Unfortunately one of their fighter patrols spotted them a few minutes ago.
DAVID: So ask the prime minister for the flyover. He should agree.
MIKE: The secretary of state has spoken to him. He said he would grant us this under one condition.
DAVID: What's the condition?
MIKE: He wants a personal request and assurances from the president.
DAVID: The prime minister hasn't been told that I've been removed from office.
MIKE: No, that couldn't happen, not before the American people know.
DAVID: No, that wouldn't be right now, would it, Mike?
MIKE: Now that the bombers have been spotted, it's more critical than ever that they get to their targets quickly. Any detour will take them over unfriendly skies.
DAVID: So you want me to speak to the prime minister, under the pretence that I'm still the president.
MIKE: Yes. This mission is going to continue regardless, sir. This phone call, no matter how distasteful for you, could prevent those planes from being attacked. We only have minutes, sir.
[Sherry lies on the couch. Jack enters the loft.]
SHERRY: Why did you leave me like this? I've been stabbed.
JACK: Let me look at it.
SHERRY: Be careful.
JACK: You're lucky. The wound's superficial. The bleeding has already stopped. I'll get you a clean bandage for it.
SHERRY: Where's Alex?
JACK: He fell. He's dead.
SHERRY: Oh my God. What happens now?
[Jack finds a bandage and puts it over her wound.]
JACK: You're going to help me. Just put this right here.
SHERRY: Help you do what?
JACK: We got one last play. To deliver Kingsley.
SHERRY: No. He's far too dangerous, and you'll never get close to him.
JACK: You're right. I won't. But you will. Kingsley doesn't know Hewitt's been killed. If you tell him you can deliver him, that should get his attention.
SHERRY: No. Kingsley has evidence that will implicate me. There is no way I'm gonna do this.
JACK: Mrs. Palmer, you -
[He stumbles and holds a hand to his chest. Obviously his heart gives him great pain.]
SHERRY: What?
JACK: It's nothing, I'm fine.
SHERRY: Don't tell me it's nothing. What's going on?
JACK: My heart stopped when Kingsley's men were interrogating me.
SHERRY: Your heart could be damaged. You need to get to a doctor.
JACK: We need to get Kingsley first. Mrs. Palmer, you are going to help me. I'm not gonna give you another choice.
SHERRY: You wouldn't dare hurt me.
JACK: Make no mistake about it. I will do what I have to do.
[He walks over to Hewitt's computer and starts working.]
SHERRY: What do you want me to do?
JACK: I want you to tell Kingsley that you'll exchange Hewitt for any evidence that he has that incriminates you.
SHERRY: He'll want proof that I have Hewitt.
JACK: He'll get it.
SHERRY: How?
JACK: Hewitt's gonna talk to him.
[Kingsley is on the phone.]
KINGSLEY: At this point we can assume the chip containing the source recordings has not landed in government hands.
MAX: Did you intercept the federal agent who was in possession of the chip?
KINGSLEY: No. But since the bombers are still on course, we can assume that he wasn't able to deliver it to the president.
MAX: Which leaves Hewitt as the last remaining loose end. Where are we on finding him?
KINGSLEY: I have several teams out looking for him.
MAX: He cannot be allowed to talk. Not now, nor ever.
KINGSLEY: Hewitt will be found. An he'll be eliminated.
MAX: Clean this up, Peter.
[He shuts his phone.]
[CTU. Chappelle, two men and Carrie walk around a corner. Tony sees them and starts to leave.]
RYAN: (to one man) Go over it again. Even if you need to pull a couple of agents in to help you.
[Hammond blocks Tony's way on the other side. Tony gives in.]
RYAN: I don't need to tell you you're under arrest. Where is Michelle Dessler?
TONY: She didn't know anything about this.
RYAN: She called me to the room where you drugged me.
TNOY: She didn't know what I was gonna do.
RYAN: I need to issue a warrant. Contact local police, issue a memo.
CARRIE: I can find her.
RYAN: How?
CARRIE: This whole thing's been about helping Jack Bauer. She's not here, that's what she's doing somewhere off-site.
RYAN: How do we find her?
CARRIE: By track her access code. See if she's logged onto the CTU computer network.
RYAN: Then do it.
CARRIE: Right away.
RYAN: (to the men) Put him in holding 2.
06:34:11, 06:34:12, 06:34:13, 06:34:14
[Hewitt's loft. Jack's at the computer. His phone rings.]
JACK: Yeah?
MICHELLE: Jack, I'm connected to Hewitt's computer, I just need you to press the "escape" key and I can take control.
[Jack presses a key.]
JACK: Done.
MICHELLE: What did Hewitt tell you?
JACK: He told me he invented a program that could recreate anybody's voice. As long as he had a sample of that voice, he could get it to say anything he wanted it. He told me he kept all the audio files in a main file.
MICHELLE: All right, I think, I've found it. - I've never seen anything like this before. All the samples are connected through an integrator.
JACK: OK, all I need is anything with Hewitt's voice on it.
MICHELLE: All right, hold on.
[She opens an audio file and starts it to play.]
MALE VOICE: I'm gonna need Berkeley and Wilkerson at that lunch.
FEMALE VOICE: I'll have to shift it to one o'clock then.
MALE VOICE: Fine.
MICHELLE: Is that him?
JACK: No, dammit. There's hundreds of files, hold on a second. Mrs. Palmer, when did you call Hewitt?
SHERRY: Last night, around midnight. Why?
JACK: He might have recorded it. Michelle, can you filter through the audio files by time and date?
MICHELLE: Let me see. - Yeah.
JACK: OK. See if you can pull an audio file that was recorded either late last night or early this morning, right around midnight.
[Michelle finds a file from 23:58.]
MICHELLE: This must be it.
HEWITT'S VOICE: Hello?
SHERRY'S VOICE: Alex Hewitt?
HEWITT'S VOICE: Who's this?
JACK: That's him.
SHERRY'S VOICE: Sherry Palmer.
MICHELLE: We have to let it run.
HEWITT'S VOICE: The president's ex-wife? What are you calling me for?
SHERRY'S VOICE: I know all about your relationship with Peter Kingsley, Alex.
HEWITT'S VOICE: I don't know any Peter Kingsley.
SHERRY'S VOICE: I also know that you had all his phone conversations recorded. - Let me ask you. Was that to protect yourself or to blackmail him? - It's OK, Alex. I'm here to help you.
HEWITT'S VOICE: Who says I need help?
[Michelle sees the Division agents coming her way, looking for her.]
SHERRY'S VOICE: Peter thought you'd die in Los Angeles with everybody else today. And now that you haven't, he's gonna come after you. So listen to me, and I can protect you.
MICHELLE: All right. The program says we have enough material to create a phonetic template.
JACK: OK, good. What do we do?
MICHELLE: All we have to do is open up a .gen file and type in the phrases we want voiced.
JACK: What do you mean, "open a .gen file"? - Michelle?
MICHELLE: He created a separate program module for playback. All we have to find out is what menu it's under.
JACK: What am I looking for?
[There are voices from outside.]
WOMAN: It's not here.
MICHELLE: Try a subroutine called Prologue.
[A man looks at Michelle's van.]
MAN: It's this one.
MICHELLE: They've found me, Jack.
JACK: OK, it's loading. What am I looking for now?
MICHELLE: Something that looks like a playback graphic interface. They are almost here, Jack.
MAN: Come out of the van.
JACK: Hold on, Michelle. Hold on.
[The van's door is cracked. A man enters.]
MAN: Ma'am, hands off the keyboard.
JACK: OK, I've got it. Michelle?
MAN 2: Do we take her in?
JACK: Michelle?
MAN: Yeah, affirmative, Central. She's in custody.
[They haul her off.]

[Prescott looks at a screen with the bombers' icons over the Mediterranean. Jack works on the computer. Sherry sits on the couch.]
[OC. David Palmer, Novick, and another man step out of an elevator and walk down a floor.]
DAVID: Hello, Heather.
HEATHER: Mr. President. - I'm sorry.
DAVID: It's all right, Heather.
[They enter the conference room. The White House is on the screen.]
FEMALE VOICE: Mr. President, we are ready.
[Prescott turns to the camera.]
PRESCOTT: David. I realise how awkward this is. I hope Mike has told you how much we appreciate your help.
DAVID: Make no mistake. I believe you're making a gross and tragic error. I'm doing this for the men in those planes.
[Novick takes the phone from the desk and presses a key.]
MAN: Sir?
MIKE: We're ready here. You can patch in the prime minister.
MAN: Yes, sir.
[The Turkish Prime Minister appears on the screen.]
DAVID: Mr. Prime Minister.
PRIME MINISTER: Hello, Mr. President. I've been trying to reach you for some time.
[Kate comes up to the Mathesons' house. The door is open. She enters.]
KATE: Kim. - Kim.
[She starts looking around.]
06:43:11, 06:43:12, 06:43:13, 06:43:14
KATE: Hello?
[Kim sits on the floor. She has the gun in her hand.]
KATE: Hello?
[Kim watches Kate.]
KATE: Kim?
[She hears a noise and turns.]
KATE: Kim? - Kim?
[Kim stands up.]
KIM: Who are you?
KATE: I'm Kate Warner. Your father sent me to come get you.
[Kim takes up the gun and aims at Kate.]
KIM: How do I know that?
KATE: OK. You shot a man who came in here to attack you. It was self-defence. Your father, Jack Bauer, called me, asked me to come get you, take you to CTU. How else would I know about that?
KIM: How do you know my dad? Do you work at CTU?
KATE: No. My family was involved with what happened today.
KIM: Why would my dad send someone he'd just met to come get me?
KATE: He trusts me.
[Kim thinks about this.]
KATE: Come on, Kim. It's OK.
[Kim takes down the gun.]
KATE: The sooner we leave, the sooner you and your dad can be together. OK?
[She walks over to Kim and touches her.]
06:45:25, 06:45:26, 06:45:27, 06:45:28
[Michelle and Tony are in a holding room.]
MICHELLE: What do you think they'll charge us with?
TONY: They could push for treason, if they wanted to.
MICHELLE: Think they will?
TONY: Depends on how big of an example they wanna make of us. - Look, Michelle, no one can prove that you knew anything about what I was gonna do to Chappelle. Right now I'm just gonna tell them that you were helping Jack under my orders, all right?
MICHELLE: No.
TONY: What do you mean, "no"?
MICHELLE: I did what I thought was right. I still believe that. And I won't let you lie for me.
[They take their hands.]
[OC. A man opens the door for Palmer.]
MIKE: David. Thank you. I know how difficult it must have been for you.
DAVID: How much longer is Prescott gonna keep me here?
MIKE: Until after the press conference. I've requested you be released sooner, but there's only so much I can do.
[Palmer looks at him.]
MIKE: I spoke to Brian. He requested some low-security access on your behalf. I wanted you to know I granted it.
[Palmer doesn't answer. Finally Novick leaves.]

[The bomber icons on a screen, Novick looking at the screen. Tony and Michelle in the holding room. Jack on the computer.]
[Kate drives Kim to CTU.]
KIM: So, what's going on with you and my dad?
KATE: Excuse me?
KIM: Out of everyone he could have called, he called you. There's gotta be a reason.
KATE: I don't think he trusts very many people.
KIM: He trusts you. - Is it true, you guys just met today?
KATE: Yesterday, really, but - yeah, it is.
KIM: I don't resent it or anything. I just - want him to be happy. It's, ah, been a long time.
KATE: Since you lost your mother?
KIM: Yeah.
KATE: I lost my mother too. When I was about your age.
[Jack works on Hewitt's computer.]
SHERRY: I, I really don't think I can do this.
JACK: You'll do fine. Just tell him everything that I told you to say. Make the call.
[He hands her the phone. She starts dialing.]
[Kingsley's office. The woman is on the phone.]
WOMAN: Understood. (to Kingsley) Still no sign of Hewitt.
06:54:06, 06:54:07, 06:54:08, 06:54:09
[Kingsley thinks. His phone rings.]
KINGSLEY: Yes?
SHERRY: It's Sherry Palmer, Peter.
KINGSLEY: Are we on a secure line?
SHERRY: Of course we are. I want the tapes that you made of our conversation. I want the original DATs.
KINGSLEY: And why would agree to give you those?
SHERRY: Because I'll give you Alex Hewitt in return.
KINGSLEY: You've found Hewitt?
SHERRY: That's right.
KINGSLEY: Where is he?
SHERRY: Don't insult my intelligence, Peter. Agree to the exchange, then you can do whatever you want with him.
KINGSLEY: I want to talk to him.
SHERRY: You'll have to hold on. My bodyguard has him restrained in the next room.
[Jack works on the computer. He signals Sherry to go on.]
SHERRY: All right, Alex, you can talk.
HEWITT'S VOICE: Mr. Kingsley, it's not what you think. They came in here with guns and threatened to kill me. I didn't tell them anything about you, I swear, please.
KINGSLEY: Who's been there, Alex? Who have you told about this?
SHERRY: All right. Do we have a deal or not?
KINGSLEY: Not till I know what's going on there. Look, give me Alex back.
SHERRY: I'm not gonna keep this call going on, Peter, so that you can trace it. Is it yes or no?
KINGSLEY: Look, this is an ultimatum, Mrs. Palmer. You put Alex back on, or this conversation's ended.
SHERRY: You force my hand and I'll make sure that Alex Hewitt tells his story to as many people as possible.
KINGSLEY: It's your final chance, Mrs. Palmer.
[Jack signals Sherry to end the phone call.]
SHERRY: Then it's goodbye, Peter.
[All three of them are waiting.]
KINGSLEY: Fine. Let's do this.
SHERRY: Neutral ground.
KINGSLEY: All right. LA Coliseum, gate 18, 30 minutes. Just you and Alex.
SHERRY: All right.
JACK: Very good work, Mrs. Palmer. Let's go.
06:56:28, 06:56:29, 06:56:30, 06:56:31
[Kingsley's office.]
KINGSLEY: Sherry Palmer has Hewitt.
WOMAN: What does she want?
KINGSLEY: I get this feeling I'm being set up. - Hewitt's just the bait to draw me out into the open.
WOMAN: So, what are you gonna do?
KINGSLEY: I don't have any choice, I have to play this out. Scott'll have shooters in place. Sherry Palmer and whoever else she's involved with in this won't leave there alive. And then I'm heading out of the country. - Time to roll things up around here. Now.
WOMAN: Is there anything I can do for you?
KINGSLEY: You've already done so much. I'll see you in Lisbon, next week.
[They hug.]
KINGSLEY: I am enormously grateful.
[He secretly takes a knife from the desk behind him.]
[Sherry and Jack are driving.]
SHERRY: What kind of support will you be getting from CTU?
JACK: As of now, none.
SHERRY: Wait a minute. You don't expect to take Kingsley down by yourself? That's insane.
JACK: As soon as Kingsley incriminates himself, CTU will give us backup.
SHERRY: By then it will be too late.
JACK: I'm sorry, that's how it's gonna be.
SHERRY: Kingsley will have people with him. People who will kill us the moment they realise we don't have Hewitt.
[Jack moans and breathes heavily.]
SHERRY: You OK?
JACK: I'm fine.
SHERRY: No, you're not. Pull over, Jack.
JACK: We don't have time, we've gotta keep moving.
SHERRY: No. No, pull over!
JACK: We've gotta keep moving!
[She shuts up.]
[Palmer sits in his room. Tony walks up and down in the holding room. Kate and Kim are driving. Prescott and his team are talking. Kingsley stands besides the dead woman.]
[Jack is in great pain. He grips to his chest and moans.]
SHERRY: Jack!
[She takes the wheel and tries to steer.]
SHERRY: Jack! - Jack!!
[They avoid some forthcoming cars and burst through a fence. The car goes down in a dry canal and comes to a stop at the other bank.]
