JACK BAUER Voice over: The following takes place between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
(A group of reporters are gathered in a room.)
DAVID PALMER'S AIDE: Ladies and gentlemen the President will make a brief statement; there will be no questions at this time.
(DAVID PALMER enters the room and walks up to the stand.)
DAVID PALMER: My fellow Americans, good evening. A few hours ago I had to terminate a presidential debate in order to handle what was at the time a national security threat. I can't reveal to you at this time the details surrounding the situation, those will be forthcoming in the next few hours. Let me assure you that the danger that existed a few hours ago has passed. America is safe, the American people are safe. I apologise to my opponent, Senator Keeler, and to the millions of you who are expecting to see the two of us engage in the issues, the debate will be rescheduled. I'd like to thank you all for your patience and understanding. Goodnight.
(DAVID PALMER begins to leave the room. The reporters all start shouting out questions.)
REPORTER: …was manufactured by your administration to protect your friend, Doctor Anne Packard. How do you respond to that Sir?
(DAVID PALMER stops walking and turns around.)
DAVID PALMER: Those allegations were false. Senator Keeler's charges were unfounded and we have proof, proof that comes directly from Anne Packard's ex-husband. In fact, in the next few days and weeks, Senator Keeler will have his own explaining to do. Anne Packard is an individual with the up most integrity, she didn't deserve this.
(DAVID PALMER leaves the room. The reporters call after him.)
DAVID PALMER'S AIDE: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen that's it, no more questions.
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(TONY ALMEIDA is talking on his mobile phone.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Bauer's with the Salazar brothers in Mexico, his transponder signal stopped working, we're doing everything we can to re-establish contact, tell the Delta units to hold their position until I get back to you. Alright, thanks.
(TONY ALMEIDA hangs up and turns to GAEL.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Why don't we try an amplification module?
GAEL: I've already cycled through it three times, it's not a weak signal, there's no signal.
TONY ALMEIDA: What do we think happened here?
MICHELLE DESSLER: There's a strong possibility that Jack's cover might have been blown.
TONY ALMEIDA: There's no indication that his transponder's been found or that his cover's been blown. It may be that he's in a place where he can't get a signal or the transponder's broken.
GAEL: Partial damage might have knocked it to another frequency.
TONY ALMEIDA: Let's run a scan.
MICHELLE DESSLER: I'm doing that now; I'm only a third of the way through the spectrum but so far no luck.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alight, I'll get you some help.
(TONY ALMEIDA walks over to KIM BAUER'S DESK.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Kim.
KIM BAUER: Yes Tony?
TONY ALMEIDA: Do you know how to do a frequency scan?
KIM BAUER: Yeah.
TONY ALMEIDA: Ok, we're trying to pick up your father's transponder signal; Michelle's already begun the scan, co-ordinate with her.
(TONY ALMEIDA begins to walk away.)
KIM BAUER: Uh, what's the signature?
(TONY ALMEIDA turns around.)
TONY ALMEIDA (losing patience): I already told you, thirty over five.
KIM BAUER: You didn't tell me.
TONY ALMEIDA (angry): Look Kim, I know this is hard on you, your father's life being at stake, but I need you to focus, ok?
KIM BAUER: Sorry.
EXT. LAS NEVES - THE SALAZAR RANCH
(HECTOR and RAMON SALAZAR'S convoy has started moving. RAMON SALAZAR is on the phone in his car.)
RAMON SALAZAR: Alright, call me if anything changes.
(The convoy stops moving. HECTOR and RAMON SALAZAR get out of their cars.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Why are we stopping?
RAMON SALAZAR: Thomas says there's no sign of anyone following us. Until me know more, we're better off staying here.
(Some GUARDS drag CHASE EDMUNDS up to the SALAZARS.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Would he come here on his own without backup?
RAMON SALAZAR (to JACK BAUER): Maybe he came by himself to rescue you. How sad! Does it bother you Jack that your partner is going to die trying to save you?
JACK BAUER (sarcastically): It breaks me up.
RAMON SALAZAR (to his guards): Find out if he came down here with others. Then kill him.
(The GUARDS drag CHASE EDMUNDS away.)
RAMON SALAZAR: This man Amador should have called by now to set up the meeting.
JACK BAUER: He's going to call, don't worry. Just make sure you've got your money ready.
HECTOR SALAZAR: The money's ready.
(HECTOR SALAZAR'S mobile phone rings.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Yeah?
AMADOR: It's Amador. We're ready.
HECTOR SALAZAR: Where?
AMADOR: Put Bauer on the phone, I only deal with him.
(HECTOR SALAZAR hands JACK BAUER the phone.)
JACK BAUER: This is Jack.
AMADOR: Hi Jack. Five kilometres north of town a trail splits off the road into the woods. Take it two kilometers, fifteen minutes.
JACK BAUER: Got it.
(They both hang up.)
JACK BAUER: The meeting's north of here, fifteen minutes.
(RAMON and HECTOR SALAZAR walk to their cars. RAMON SALAZAR turns back.)
RAMON SALAZAR: Hey wait, the phone.
(RAMON SALAZAR holds out his hand.)
JACK BAUER: What if he calls back?
RAMON SALAZAR: I'll take a message.
(JACK BUAER hands RAMON SALAZAR the phone.)
RAMON SALAZAR: Look at you Jack, you are a mess. I've got to get you straight, or you'll never get through this.
JACK BAUER: I'm not gonna fix.
(RAMON SALAZAR walks to his car and comes back holding a container of pills.)
RAMON SALAZAR: Take them, you'll feel better.
(JACK BAUER takes some pills.)
JACK BAUER: I need to use the bathroom.
RAMON SALAZAR: It's in the back.
(JACK BAUER walks towards the house. Inside, CLAUDIA is with her brother, SERGIO.)
CLAUDIA: I want you to get some sleep.
SERGIO: I'm not tired.
CLAUDIA: I'll wake you when it's time to leave.
SERGIO: Where's Hector?
CLAUDIA: He's busy. You'll see him tomorrow morning, go to sleep. I love you.
(CLAUDIA leaves the room and walks into the hallway. JACK BAUER rushes towards her.)
JACK BAUER: Claudia, sit down, sit down!
(CLAUDIA sits down.)
JACK BAUER: I need you to listen to me. Hector and Ramon are trying to buy a virus to use as a weapon. Millions of people could die. I've set up this deal so my government can take control of the virus and destroy it, do you understand what I'm saying?
CLAUDIA: You're still with CTU?
JACK BAUER: Yes, I'm still with CTU.
CLAUDIA: But you broke Ramon out of prison.
JACK BAUER: That was so I could gain his trust, to make the deal happen. I cannot allow this virus to get into the wrong hands.
CLAUDIA: You've betrayed us once, now you've come to betray us again?
JACK BAUER: No, them, not you.
CLAUDIA: I was a fool to believe any of it. "I'm going to protect you. I'm going to get your family so we're safe"- all lies.
JACK BAUER: I wanted to come back for you earlier, but when I heard about this virus I had to deal with it. Millions of lives are at steak, you have to understand that. But I can get you out now, you, Sergio and your father.
CLAUDIA: How?
JACK BAUER: American soldiers are not far from here, they're waiting for my signal but I can't reach them because my transmitter's been destroyed. Claudia, I have nothing to gain from telling you this if it's not the truth. One word from you and I'm a dead man.
CLAUDIA: What do you want me to do?
JACK BAUER: First I need a cell phone, I need to let CTU know where I am, and I need you to do whatever you can to help my partner Chase. Keep him alive.
CLAUDIA: When Hector realises he's going to kill me.
JACK BAUER: He'll be gone by then, Chase can help you get out, I promise. But if I can't contact CTU this is all for nothing, you've got to get me that phone, please.
CLAUDIA: I'll do what I can.
(They kiss.)
JACK BAUER: I have to go, they're waiting for me.
CLAUDIA: If you're lying to me again, I'll kill you myself.
JACK BAUER: Help Chase.
(JACK BAUER leaves the room.)
INT. LAS NIEVES - A BARN NEXT TO THE SALAZAR'S RANCH
(RAMON SALAZAR'S MEN have tied up CHASE EDMUNDS.)
MAN: Jack Bauer broke Ramon out of prison; your people are sending forces to bring him back. When are they coming?
(CHASE EDMUNDS says nothing.)
MAN: When?
(The MAN punches CHASE EDMUNDS in the stomach.)
MAN: And where?
(The MAN punches CASHE EDMUNDS a second time and then looks at another man.)
MAN: Gabriel…
(GABRIEL slams a shovel into CHASE EDMUNDS' face, JACK BAUER can hear him scream from outside.)
RAMON SALAZAR: He was your partner, you must be feeling something.
JACK BAUER: I've got a fifteen million dollar paycheck when this deal goes down, he's on his own.
RAMON SALAZAR: Is he as tough as you?
JACK BAUER: He still believes in the lie.
RAMON SALAZAR: What lie?
JACK BAUER: That what he's doing has purpose.
RAMON SALAZAR (laughing): Belief is a beautiful thing.
(RAMON SALAZAR'S phone rings.)
RAMON SALAZAR: Hello?
(RAMON SALAZAR walks away to take the call. JACK BAUER listens to CHASE EDMUNDS' screams.)
EXT. LAS NEVES - THE SALAZAR RANCH
(CLAUDIA and HECTOR SALAZAR are getting dressed.)
CLAUDIA: Where are you going? Don't leave. Sit down for a minute.
(They kiss. At the same time, CLAUDIA reaches out and takes HECTOR SALAZAR'S mobile phone.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Ramon is waiting, ok?
(CLAUDIA and HECTOR SALAZAR walk outside. HECTOR SALAZAR walks over to RAMON SALAZAR and CLAUDIA walks over to JACK BAUER, to give him the phone, but she is called back.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Claudia, I left my phone inside.
CLAUDIA: I'll get it.
HECTOR SALAZAR (to his MEN): Let's go!
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 09:12:49 to 09:17:08 before fading away.)
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(KIM BAUER walks up to CHLOE O'BRIAN.)
KIM BAUER: Chloe?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: What?
KIM BAUER: Have you heard from Chase?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: No.
KIM BAUER: Are there alternate frequencies he might use to contact you?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Yeah there are, and they're on autoscan, and he hasn't checked in.
KIM BAUER: Look Chloe, I know that you're busy, but maybe we can reach him by satellite.
CHLOE O’BRIAN (sarcastically): Satellite, good idea, I didn't think of that Kim! I'll get right on that!
KIM BAUER: You don't have to be sarcastic with me Chloe; this is someone I care about.
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Get a grip.
(Meanwhile, TONY ALMEIDA is talking on the phone.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Look, I have to update the President in half an hour, I don't want to tell him we're in the same place we were a half hour ago, which is nowhere… I don't, I don't want excuses, just get me the answer, alright?
(TONY ALMEIDA hangs up. KIM BAUER walks up to him.)
KIM BAUER: I need to finalise the com file.
TONY ALMEIDA (annoyed): It should have been done already.
KIM BAUER: Well I need the format code and you said you were going to download it.
TONY ALMEIDA: Delta Seven Three Three Golf.
KIM BAUER: That's the code from the previous file.
(TONY ALMEIDA types something on his computer and gets the right code.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Delta Seven Two Three Bravo.
KIM BAUER: Thank you.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright.
(KIM BAUER walks over to ADAM.)
ADAM: Did you get it?
KIM BAUER: Yeah I got it.
ADAM: Eight minutes shot to hell on an invalid code…
(KIM BAUER types the code into her computer.)
KIM BAUER: Access granted.
ADAM: You know that could have been a disaster, without those files we can't track the rescue teams.
(ADAM walks away.)
INT. DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS - DAVID PALMER'S OFFICE
(DAVID PALMER is sitting at his desk. Someone knocks on the door.)
DAVID PALMER: Come.
(WAYNE PALMER: walks in.)
WAYNE PALMER: Bad news, CTU lost track of Jack Bauer.
DAVID PALMER: Is he in trouble?
WAYNE PALMER: We don't know.
DAVID PALMER: Does he have possession of the virus yet?
WAYNE PALMER: We don't know that either David.
(Someone knocks on the door.)
DAVID PALMER: Come.
SECRETARY: Mr President, I have Alan Milliken on the line for you.
DAVID PALMER: I'll take it.
(The SECRETARY and WAYNE PALMER leave the room. DAVID PALMER picks up the phone.)
DAVID PALMER: Alan?
ALAN MILLIKEN: David, you angry with me?
DAVID PALMER: Of course I'm not angry with you.
ALAN MILLIKEN: Your first time in LA in three years and you don't even call.
DAVID PALMER: It's been a bad day Alan.
ALAN MILLIKEN: I know, I've been watching the news. I don't want to be a burden but I'd like to come by and see you.
DAVID PALMER: See me?
ALAN MILLIKEN: David, I wouldn't ask if it weren't important. I know you're busy, after all you are the President of the United States.
DAVID PALMER: In large part thanks to you. I'll come to you Alan, I'll be there in fifteen minutes.
ALAN MILLIKEN: Thanks you David, and one more thing, as a personal favour to me, I'm asking you not to bring Wayne.
DAVID PALMER: May I ask why?
ALAN MILLIKEN: That's something I'd rather explain in person.
DAVID PALMER: Alright.
(They both hang up. DAVID PALMER sighs and looks at WAYNE PALMER through a window.)
INT. CTU- MAIN FLOOR
(TONY ALMEIDA is standing at GAEL desk. GAEL is working on his computer.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Where are we?
GAEL: So far, I'm not able to pick up Jack on any of our imagery.
TONY ALMEIDA: How long have we been out of contact?
GAEL: His tracking beacon went dead twenty seven minutes ago.
TONY ALMEIDA: Last known location?
(GAEL highlights an area on his computer screen.)
GAEL: Here. He can't be much further out than thirty miles in any one direction.
TONY ALMEIDA: Unless he was choppered out.
GAEL: No way, air tactic was watching the skies.
(RYAN CHAPELLE enters the room.)
RYAN CHAPELLE: Where's Bauer?
TONY ALMEIDA: We don't know yet.
RYAN CHAPELLE: That's great! So this entire operation which hinges on Jack being on site when they deliver the virus is going down the tubes because we don't know where he is. How does that happen?
TONY ALMEIDA: Look Ryan, you want to chew us out, do it later, we're trying to get this back on track.
RYAN CHAPELLE: I will. You better find Bauer and make this thing work Tony, otherwise the two of you and Jack, assuming he's still alive, are gonna take the fall for everything that happened today. For the prison riots to Salazar's escape, and every dead body in between.
(RYAN CHAPELLE leaves the room.)
GAEL: So what happens if Jack goes to this meeting without backup?
TONY ALMEIDA: The Salazars get the virus. What happens from there, I don't know.
EXT. FIVE KILOMETRES NORTH OF LAS NIEVES
(JACK BAUER, HECTOR and RAMON SALAZAR and their men pull up outside a lit marquee not far from Las Nieves.)
RALON SALAZAR: Feeling better?
JACK BAUER: Fine.
(JACK BAUER gets out of the car. AMADOR walks up to greet him.)
JACK BAUER: Amador.
AMADOR: Hello Jack.
(HECTOR and RAMON SALAZAR walk up to them.)
AMADOR: So theses must be the buyers you're representing.
JACK BAUER: This is Hector and Ramon Salazar.
(JACK BAUER takes an envelope from his pocket.)
JACK BAUER: There's one hundred million dollars in Escrow accounts in Geneva and Hong Kong. We're prepared to give immediate instructions to have the money transferred as soon as we have confirmation that the virus has been delivered.
AMADOR: There's been a complication, another buyer's interested in the virus.
JACK BAUER: What are you talking about, we have a deal.
HECTOR SALAZAR: What's going on Jack?
JACK BAUER: I don't know.
AMADOR: I have nothing to do with it. That's a new development that's just surfaced in the last few hours. We'll hold an auction and the virus will go to the highest bidder.
HECTOR SALAZAR: You're so…
(HECTOR SALAZAR lunges at AMADOR. AMADOR'S MEN raise their weapons.)
AMADOR: Mr Salazar, I merely represent the wishes of my client.
JACK BAUER: May we have a moment?
AMADOR: Of course.
(AMADOR walks away.)
JACK BAUER: Hector, this does not need to be a problem.
HECTOR SALAZAR: It's a huge problem.
JACK BAUER: Think it through, you add forty to fifty million dollars to this price tag and you're still looking over an eight hundred million dollar profit. You said you could move the virus for a billion dollars, that was your estimate right?
HECTOR SALAZAR: Something like that.
JACK BAUER: You've come this far, don't stop, let it play out.
(A car pulls up.)
AMADOR: The other buyer's here.
(NINA MYERS gets out of the car. JACK BAUER is uncomfortable. He squirms and looks away.)
RAMON SALAZAR: You know her?
(NINA MYERS spots JACK BAUER.)
NINA MYERS: What the hell is he doing here? That man is a federal agent.
AMADOR: I know who he is Nina, everything's fine.
NINA MYERS: No it's not, he's setting us up, you have to kill him! (to her MEN) Kill him!
(NINA MYER'S MEN raise their guns. AMADOR'S MEN raise their guns.)
AMADOR: The first man who fires gets cut down, that's a promise.
(NINA MYER'S motions for her men to lower their weapons.)
NINA MYERS: Why is he here?
AMADOR: He represents a buyer Nina, just like you.
NINA MYERS: No he doesn't, believe me, I know him. Whatever he's told you, he's lying.
JACK BAUER: I don't work for CTU anymore Nina, I work for myself.
NINA MYERS: I'm out of here.
(NINA MYERS turns and begins to walk away.)
AMADOR: Nina pleases.
JACK BAUER: Let her go and honour the original agreement.
AMADOR: Nina! I don't think your client's going to be too happy if you walk out and let the virus go to another buyer.
(NINA MYERS stops walking.)
NINA MYER'S MAN (to NINA MYERS): We got to close this deal.
AMADOR: We have a wide perimeter, look outs everywhere and we're monitoring every frequency. There's no law or military within twenty five kilometres. You know how I work, this area's completely secure. If I had the slightest doubt I wouldn't be here. I suggest we all take a few minutes to calm ourselves. Then I'll explain the ground rules and we'll proceed with the bids. Agreed?
RAMON SALAZAR: Agreed.
NINA MYERS: Fine.
AMADOR: Good.
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 09:25:50 to 09:30:09 before fading away.)
EXT. ALAN MILLIKEN'S HOUSE
(DAVID PALMER'S convoy pulls up outside ALAN MILLIKEN'S house. DAVID PALMER walks into the house and into a room where ALAN MILLIKEN is sitting behind a desk.)
ALAN MILLIKEN: David.
DAVID PALMER: Alan, it's good to see you.
ALAN MILLIKEN: Thanks for finding the time to fit me in.
DAVID PALMER: You've always made time for me Alan, even when there was no obvious reason to do so.
ALAN MILLIKEN Your potential was always obvious David.
DAVID PALMER: How are you doing?
ALAN MILLIKEN: Well I could use a few new body parts, but asides that…
DAVID PALMER: You look well.
ALAN MILLIKEN: I know you're wandering what could be so important that I'd ask you here, so I'll be brief and I'll be blunt, I want your brother off the team.
DAVID PALMER: I don't understand. You've always been supportive of Wayne.
ALAN MILLIKEN: I was. I'm not anymore.
DAVID PALMER: What's this all about Alan?
(ALAN MILLIKEN presses a button on his intercom.)
MAN: Yes sir?
ALAN MILLIKEN: Tell my wife to come in here.
MAN: Right away sir.
(JULIA MILLIKEN enters the room. She kisses DAVID PALMER.)
DAVID PALMER: Julia.
JULIA MILLIKEN: Mr President.
ALAN MILLIKEN: David is wondering why I want him to fire Wayne, and I thought you should explain.
JULIA MILLIKEN: As you know I've known Wayne for some time. Three years ago, when he was president of Alan's company, we began to spend quite a bit of time together.
ALAN MILLIKEN: Get to it Julia.
JULIA MILLIKEN: Wayne and I became involved.
ALAN MILLIKEN: They had an affair, while I was recuperating from the stroke! That's how your brother thanked me. (to JULIA MILLIKEN) Go on.
JULIA MILLIKEN: We saw each other for a year before you asked him to join your administration, then we broke it off.
DAVID PALMER: Hold on. (to ALAN MILLIKEN) If you knew about this, why didn't you say something?
ALAN MILLIKEN: I didn't, I just found out recently. Did you know David? Did you keep it from me too?
DAVID PALMER: Of course not, and I can hardly even believe it's true.
JULIA MILLIKEN: It's true. (to ALAN MILLIKEN) I told you how sorry I am…
ALAN MILLIKEN: You can go!
(JULIA MILLIKEN leaves the room.)
ALAN MILLIKEN: I waited for you to come to Los Angeles, so I could do this face to face. I gave your brother my company and he took my wife, now I'm taking away his job.
DAVID PALMER: Wayne is my chief of staff, my closest friend. Trust him.
ALAN MILLIKEN: I don't, and neither should you, he's dishonest. I think you'll agree David, that you wouldn't be where you are without my support over the years. I've never asked you for anything in return, but I'm asking you now. Fire Wayne.
DAVID PALMER: Sorry Alan, I can't do that.
ALAN MILLIKEN: I'm disappointed, not surprised, and you know me well enough not to be surprised if there are repercussions.
DAVID PALMER: I hope you're not threatening me.
ALAN MILLIKEN: I don't make threats David, I just tell it like it is. You let me know if you change your mind.
(ALAN MILLIKEN, who was in a wheelchair, is wheeled out of the room.)
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(MICHELLE DESSLER is talking to ADAM.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: Have them open up the field search to these co-ordinates. Tell them it's a priority.
(KIM BAUER walks up to them.)
ADAM: Do you want me to ask them…
KIM BAUER (to MICHELLE DESSLER): Sorry, I don't mean to interrupt, but can I see you for a minute?
MICHELLE DESSLER (to ADAM): Do you have enough to go on?
ADAM: I'll let you know if the satellite guys give me any trouble.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Ok.
(ADAM walks away. MICHELLE DESSLER turns to KIM BAUER.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: What is it?
KIM BAUER: It's actually about Tony. Look, I don't know if he's…
MICHELLE DESSLER: You don't know if he's what?
KIM BAUER: I don't know if he's well enough to do his job.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Kim he was shot a few hours ago, he's not going to be working at full capacity.
KIM BAUER: I know but what if he misses something important, I mean he's running things.
MICHELLE DESSLER: What happened?
KIM BAUER: He asked me to finalise the Com files but he forgot to give me the format codes, and then just before he chewed me out for forgetting something he thought he told me, except he never told me.
MICHELLE DESSLER: He's under a lot of stress, we all are.
KIM BAUER: That's my point. Michelle, you're his wife, but you're also second in command and if Tony can't do the job, somebody has to tell Chapelle, and I think that someone should be you.
(KIM BAUER walks away.)
EXT. LAS NIEVES - A BARN NEXT TO THE SALAZAR'S RANCH
(RAMON SALAZAR'S MEN have beaten up CHASE EDMUNDS. They leave the barn. CLAUDIA walks up to them.)
CLAUDIA: What are you doing?
MAN: Taking a rest.
CLAUDIA: There's oil under Hector's truck. It needs to be fixed before Hector gets back. Now!
MAN: Ok, I'll check it out.
(The MAN leaves. CLAUDIA walks into the barn and up to CHASE EDMUNDS, who is tied up. She gives him some water.)
CLAUDIA: Here. I have a message from Jack. Can you here me? Things aren't what they seem, Jack isn't really with Ramon and Hector, everything he's done has been to earn their trust. The virus that they're going to buy, Jack is going to take it from them. Do you understand? There are soldiers from your country not far from here. They'll come when Jack calls for them.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Claudia…
CLAUDIA: Jack promised to get me and my family out of here if I help you.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Then help me.
CLAUDIA: I can't now; there are too many men around. Don't give up, I'll figure out a way. All right?
(CLAUDIA leaves the barn.)
EXT. FIVE KILOMETRES NORTH OF LAS NIEVES
(JACK BAUER walks up to HECTOR and RAMON SALAZAR.)
JACK BAUER: Each party will make one final bid in writing. Amador wants to start in the next ten minutes. You have to come up with a number.
HECTOR SALAZAR: We are offering a hundred. She must have made an offer to make this worth while. Say another fifty.
RAMON SALAZAR: So we go one seventy-five?
HECTOR SALAZAR: More. If we do this, we do it to win, at least two hundred.
RAMON SALAZAR: Make the calls.
(HECTOR SALAZAR walks away to make the calls.)
RAMON SALAZAR (nodding towards NINA MYERS): Who is she?
JACK BAUER: I told you she worked for me at CTU.
RAMON SALAZAR: No, there's more between you and this woman.
JACK BAUER: She killed my wife.
RAMON SALAZAR: Is this going to be a problem Jack?
JACK BAUER: No. No problem.
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 09:38:50 to 09:43:09 before fading away.)
EXT. LAS NEVES - THE SALAZAR RANCH
(CLAUDIA is talking to her younger brother, SERGIO.)
SERGIO: Where are we going?
CLAUDIA: We'll be together.
SERGIO: We're together now, is Hector coming with us?
CLAUDIA: Sergio, just be ready to leave.
SERGIO: But what about Hector…
CLAUDIA: Sergio, forget about Hector, just do what I'm telling you!
(SERGIO walks away. CLAUDIA walks into the kitchen and searches the drawers for a weapon. CLAUDIA'S FATHER walks in.)
CLAUDIA'S FATHER: What are you going to do?
CLAUDIA: Jack said if I help his partner he'll get us out of here Papa.
CLAUDIA'S FATHER: These people, Ramon, Hector, Jack Bauer, you can't trust any of them.
CLAUDIA: Jack's not like Ramon and Hector. Papa please, this is our chance to get out of here.
CLAUDIA'S FATHER: Then go.
CLAUDIA: No. No, we're all going. No, I'm not going without you.
(They hug. CLAUDIA then takes a sharp knife from a drawer.)
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(TONY ALMEIDA is talking on the phone.)
TONY ALMEIDA: What about Landside Alpha three nine? Yeah. That's about it right? Thanks.
(TONY ALMEIDA hangs up. MICHELLE DESSLER walks over to him.)
TONY ALMEIDA: I just checked all the NSA logs, there's no satellites going through the area we think Jack's in.
MICHELLE DESSLER: I'll check the flight paths just in case.
TONY ALMEIDA: Just in case what, I just checked it.
MICHELLE DESSLER: There have been other mistakes today Tony.
TONY ALMEIDA: Mistakes. That you think I made?
MICHELLE DESSLER: Sweetheart you should still be in the hospital. If you're not a hundred percent you should step down.
TONY ALMEIDA: I'm fine.
MICHELLE DESSLER: And after what you've been through today I don't see how you could…
TONY ALMEIDA (shouting): I just said I'm fine alright, end of discussion, please!
(ADAM walks up to them.)
ADAM: Tony, I've got something. NSA's got a satellite we may be able to reposition; we just have to ask for access.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright thanks.
ADAM: Yeah.
(ADAM leaves and then TONY ALMEIDA walks back up to his office. MICHELL DESSLER walks into RYAN CHAPELLE'S office. He is on the phone.)
RYAN CHAPELLE: Yes?
MICHELLE DESSLER: I need to talk to you Ryan
RYAN CHAPELLE (into the phone): Hold on.
(RYAN CHAPELLE puts the caller on hold.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: I don't think Tony should be here right now.
RYAN CHAPELLE: My understanding is he's not in any imminent danger.
MICHELLE DESSLER: No it's not that. I've had reports he's been forgetful, missing things.
RYAN CHAPELLE: Like what?
MICHELLE DESSLER: Key information. Format codes, things that are causing delays… On any other day I wouldn't be worried about this, but… I'm just not sure if he's up to it today.
RYAN CHAPELLE: If I pull him now that sets us back too. No one can replace what he does, he Gael and Jack have been working this from the beginning. Unless you think his mistakes are significant enough…
MICHELLE DESSLER: I do, or else I wouldn't be bringing this to you.
RYAN CHAPELLE: Alright, just let me wrap up this call and I'll get into it.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Thank you.
INT. DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS - WAYNE PALMER'S OFFICE
(WAYNE PALMER is talking on the phone.)
WAYNE PALMER: I understand that but you need to make it happen.
WOMAN: We're working on it sir.
WAYNE PALMER: Alright, thanks.
(WAYNE PALMER hangs up. DAVID PALMER knocks at the door and walks in.)
DAVID PALMER: I just got back from seeing Alan.
WAYNE PALMER: What did he want?
DAVID PALMER: Oh I think you know.
WAYNE PALMER: Know what David?
DAVID PALMER: He wants me to fire you. What the hell were you thinking? Carrying on an affair with a married woman! The wife of my biggest supporter!
WAYNE PALMER: Listen, I am sorry, but it was a mistake and I corrected it.
DAVID PALMER: Not in Alan's mind. For him this is fresh. He just found out, and he wants to make you pay.
WAYNE PALMER: Look we both know you can't afford to make any enemy out of Alan; he wields too much power, so I'll resign.
DAVID PALMER: You'll leave only if I decide that it's the right thing to do, not Alan Milliken.
WAYNE PALMER: David, Alan is a very dirty fighter, trust me. Are you sure you want to get down there in the gutter with that man?
DAVID PALMER: Well you haven't left me much choice have you?
(DAVID PALMER leaves the room.)
INT. CTU - RYAN CHAPELLE'S OFFICE
(MICHELLE DESSLER and RYAN CHAPELLE are in the office. TONY ALMEIDA walks in.)
TONY ALMEIDA: You wanted to see me Ryan?
RYAN CHAPELLE: Yeah.
TONY ALMEIDA: What's going on?
RYAN CHAPELLE: I asked you here because your competency is being brought into question.
TONY ALMEIDA: Huh. By whom?
MICHELLE DESSLER: By me. An employee came to me with some concerns and I…
TONY ALMEIDA: An employee?
RYAN CHAPELLE: Kim Bauer.
MICHELLE DESSLER: and I felt I needed to address them.
TONY ALMEIDA: With Ryan? You didn't come to me first.
MICHELLE DESSLER: I tried o talk to you Tony, you wouldn't…
RYAN CHAPELLE: That's enough.
TONY ALMEIDA: The point is Ryan, is that they're wrong; I am fit for duty completely.
RYAN CHAPELLE: Alright. When you entered the room, the monitor was on. Tell me what it showed.
TONY ALMEIDA: On the left side was a C-Tan schematic of the country indicating an ongoing investigation in Florida, New York and Montana. On the right side was an all clear report from the Austin branch.
RYAN CHAPELLE: That's correct. It still doesn't ease my mind considering the slips you made.
TONY ALMEIDA: What slips?
RYAN CHAPELLE: Michelle…
MICHELLE DESSLER: You thought you gave Kim the signature on the frequency scans, you didn't.
TONY ALMEIDA: Not verbally no, I put them on her in screen fifteen minutes before I talked to her. Anything else?
MICHELLE DESSLER: She said you didn't load the format codes onto the grid in time.
TONY ALMEIDA: No, I didn't load the format codes onto her grid, I put them in the shared volume, on time. Check it.
(MICHELLE DESSLER starts typing on a computer.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: It's there.
RYAN CHAPELLE: Alright. I'm sorry Tony, we're done here.
TONY ALMEIDA: Good.
(TONY ALMEIDA leaves the room.)
RYAN CHAPELLE: You've wasted time we don't have.
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 09:50:50 to 09:55:09 before fading away.)
EXT. FIVE KILOMETRES NORTH OF LAS NIEVES
(NINA MYERS, JACK BAUER, RAMON SALAZAR and HECTOR SALAZAR are body searched by AMADOR'S MEN and then led into a lit marquee. They then all sit around a table with AMADOR.)
AMADOR: Are you ready with your bids?
JACK BAUER: Yes.
NINA MYERS: Yes.
AMADOR: Let me see them.
(JACK BAUER and NINA MYERS both hand AMADOR a piece of paper, where they have written their bids. AMADOR reads the paper JACK BAUER handed him.)
AMADOR: Your banks will verify the presence of these funds?
JACK BAUER: Yes that is correct.
(AMADOR reads the paper NINA MYERS handed him.)
NINA: The bank will verify those as well.
AMADOR (to JACK BAUER): You bid is two hundred and twenty five million dollars, hers is two hundred and forty. Nina, you win.
HECTOR SALAZAR (to AMADOR): You are a dead man.
AMADOR: My people will escort you out. (to NINA MYERS) The transfer will take place in two hours.
(JACK BAUER, RAMON SALAZAR and HECTOR SALAZAR leave the marquee.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: You said you were going to get me the virus and you didn't.
RAMON SALAZAR: Not now Hector. Come on.
(Back inside the marquee, AMADOR hands NINA MYERS a piece of paper.)
AMADOR: I'll be contacting you with the details.
NINA MYERS: Excellent, we'll be waiting for you call.
AMADOR: Let's go!
(The three groups get into their cars and start to drive away.)
JACK BAUER: You can't just let Nina Myers walk away from this; you've got to put a man on her.
HECTOR SALAZAR: Shut up.
JACK BAUER (to RAMON SALAZAR): He won't listen to me. If Nina gets away now, she'll disappear; you'll never find her again.
RAMON SALAZAR: You had your chance Jack.
HECTOR SALAZAR (to his DRIVER): Alright, this is good enough.
(The DRIVER pulls up to a small clearing.)
JACK BAUER: No please, you're making a mistake.
RAMON SALAZAR: Get out.
JACK BAUER: Look I can explain, I didn't know that…
RAMON SALAZAR (shouting): Get out!
(JACK BAUER is pushed out of the car. RAMON SALAZAR and HECTOR SALAZAR get out after him.)
RAMON SALAZAR: You are of no use to use anymore, you failed!
(HECTOR SALAZAR loads his gun.)
JACK BAUER: Hector don't do this! Ramon, think this through. What about all your buyers round the world that you promised the virus to? They're gonna know you were double crossed, and that you did nothing about it! What are you gonna say to them? I'm sorry, we'll try and get it right next time? The Salazar name will be a joke! You can't let that happen. Come on! Five hours ago you were in an American prison, and now you're free because I broke you out! And then I brought you the deal of a lifetime. What do I have to do to prove to you I'm on your side? This deal can still happen. We can get the virus.
RAMON SALAZAR: How do you get the virus?
JACK BAUER: I told you, the woman, Nina.
RAMON SALAZAR: The woman, she's the problem, she outbid us.
JACK BAUER: I know her, I trained her, I can get to her.
HECTOR SALAZAR: You don't even know how to find her!
JACK BAUER: I'll find her! Please Ramon, you can't lose here. If I fail you get to kill me, fine, but if I succeed the deal will go forward and we'll be back on track. We'll all get paid. Please.
RAMON SALAZAR: Hector, let's play with out a little longer.
(HECTOR SALAZAR walks back to the car.)
RAMON SALAZAR: The man has more lives than a cat.
(RAMON SALAZAR walks back to the car, followed by JACK BAUER.)
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 09:59:57 to 10:00:00 before fading away.)
